Journey Junket · Data Collection
Our readers are part of the record.
How a travel-history publication builds a living record of what readers lived, miss and still want to see.
How the site works
Two layers, one site
The content
Stories about airline meal carts, motel pool decks, dining cars, road-trip rituals, lost destinations and the places still worth the drive. The part you came for: memory, wanderlust and good stories.
The reader signals
Layered on top is a reader ledger. One-tap questions under our photographs let readers tell us what they actually lived through, what they remember and where they still want to go. Added up across many readers, those taps become a record no archive holds: which travel rituals were truly common, which ones people miss, and which places still pull at them.
What we measure
Small taps, big picture
Every signal below is optional. If you never tap anything, nothing is asked of you and the articles read exactly the same.
❤️ / 👎 on images
Love it or not? The quickest read on which places and memories land.
Lived it / Remember it / Before my time
On our nostalgia pieces: did you do this, do you remember it, or was it before your time? The single best measure of which travel rituals readers actually lived.
Been there / Want to go / Not for me
On place and destination stories: where readers have been, and where they still want to go.
Settle It polls
Window or aisle? Motel pool or hotel lobby? Drive it or fly it? You see how other readers voted right after you tap.
Save this & Save this article
Saving to your own saves panel is a strong signal. Your saves stay in your own browser; we only count that a save happened.
“Why?” follow-up and Hot or Not
A quick reason after a reaction (brings back memories, too crowded, too far) and two-photo matchups that rank places head to head.
Reading behaviour
Which images were viewed, how far down a page readers scroll and how long they stay. Standard page analytics.
Privacy by design
What’s recorded, and what never is
Recorded with a tap
- A random session ID, created in your browser. It is not linked to your name, email or any account.
- Device type (mobile or desktop) and how you arrived (for example Pinterest, Facebook or a search engine).
- An approximate region (state or province), read from the network edge when the page loads. We do not store your IP address.
- If you arrived from one of our ads: the advertising platform’s own aggregate audience breakdown for that ad (the age-range and gender mix of everyone it reached). Never anything about you personally.
Never collected by these features
- Your name, email address or any account.
- Your IP address or precise location.
- Anything you type.
- Faces or identities. Images are described by their attributes (style, colour, era and so on), never by who is in them.
Newsletter sign-ups are separate and handled by our email provider. Advertising and analytics partners are covered in our Privacy Policy.
From taps to findings
How results are published
Added up, never singled out
We only ever look at totals and percentages across many readers.
You see the live split
Right after you vote, once enough readers have answered for the numbers to mean something.
Research needs hundreds of responses
Findings such as which road-trip rituals most readers actually lived, which vanished airline perks people miss most, and which American towns readers still most want to visit are only published when the sample is large. Small groups are never reported.
The results come back to you
As better guides and research articles on travel and the vanishing details of how we used to travel, grounded in what readers actually chose.
Your choices
Taking part is entirely up to you
Simply don’t tap. Items you save live in your own browser, so clearing your browser storage removes them. For advertising choices and cookies, see the Privacy Policy.
