Why Do Some Swimming Pools Make an Entire Resort Look More Expensive? 47 Designs That Steal the Show

A pool can carry an entire resort. You’ve seen it happen. The rooms are fine, the restaurant is fine, and then you round the corner and the water does something no marble lobby ever could. It stops you cold. The best resort pools aren’t really about swimming at all — they’re about the first thirty seconds of seeing them, that moment your brain decides the whole place is special and quietly forgives everything else. These ten pull it off through shape, setting, and a few decisions somebody sweated over. Here’s how.

47. An Infinity Edge That Merges With the Ocean Horizon

The trick is a vanishing edge sitting dead level with the real horizon. When it works, your eye genuinely can’t locate where the pool stops and the sea begins — it reads as one sheet of water running all the way to the curve of the earth.

There’s a reason these always sit at the highest point of the property. The illusion only holds from above, with nothing between you and the water but air. Nail it, and every guest photo looks like a magazine cover. Which, let’s not kid ourselves, is the point.

46. A Cliffside Pool Carved Into the Rock

Instead of fighting the cliff, the smart designs let one wall stay raw rock. You swim right up to stone that was there long before anybody drew a blueprint, water slapping against ochre and grey that no mason could ever fake.

It’s a contrast play, pure and simple. Smooth engineered water pressed against jagged ancient stone makes both look better than either would alone, and suddenly the place feels rooted in the ground rather than parachuted onto it.

45. A Double Infinity Pool Cascading Across Two Levels

Two infinity edges is showing off, and honestly? Good. The upper pool pours over its lip into a waterfall that feeds the pool below, so you get the vanishing-edge illusion twice, stacked one on top of the other.

The movement does the heavy lifting. A single still infinity pool is serene; add the cascade and the whole thing picks up sound and motion, a soft rush you hear before you even see it. And it quietly fixes a real problem on steep sites — the slope that would wreck a flat pool becomes the whole selling point.

44. An Indoor-Outdoor Pool Passing Through a Glass Wall

You start swimming indoors in climate-controlled calm, duck under a glass wall that stops just above the waterline, and surface outside in full sun. Same pool. Two worlds.

It’s one of the rare amenities that earns its keep in January and July both. The engineering is fussy — the glass has to hold against water pressure and weather all at once — but the payoff is a space that never shuts down for the season.

43. A Lagoon Pool Winding Through Tropical Gardens

Not a straight line anywhere. A lagoon pool bends and branches like something that just grew there, slipping behind palm clusters so you never quite see all of it at once.

That hidden-edge quality is what sells it. You round a planting and stumble onto a quiet inlet nobody else has found yet. The landscaping here isn’t decoration arranged around the water — it’s load-bearing. Yank the plants out and the shape stops making any sense at all.

42. A Canal-Style Pool Linking Separate Guest Villas

Picture this: your villa opens onto water, and so does the one next door, and the one after that, all strung along a single long channel. You step off your terrace straight into the pool and swim to breakfast.

The canal pulls double duty. It hands every villa its own private water access, and it threads a scattered collection of buildings into one coherent place. Seen from above, the whole resort reads as a plan rather than a random pile of roofs.

41. A Pool Running Beneath an Open-Air Lobby

The first thing you see on arrival is water, not a reception desk. The pool slides right under the open-air lobby, mirroring the timber ceiling and the sky overhead, so you walk in across a reflection of the place you’re entering.

It sets the tone before anyone’s even taken your name. Still water in an entryway reads as calm, as arrival, a quiet cue to let your shoulders drop. Some of these you can actually swim in; some are shallow reflecting pools for pure effect. Both land because the message gets delivered in the first three seconds.

40. A Series of Pools Stepping Down a Hillside

Rather than gouge one enormous pool into a slope, the clever move is several smaller ones, each on its own terrace, stepping down the hill with short cascades linking them.

Every level gets a view and a crowd all its own. The lower pools feel tucked-away and private, the top ones grab the widest outlook of all. A hillside most builders would curse as a problem turns into the best thing the property’s got.

39. A Cave Pool Lit Through a Natural Opening

Here the light is the whole show. A single opening in the cave ceiling drops a shaft of daylight onto the water, and the pool glows turquoise from below while the walls stay back in cool shadow.

Some of these are natural cenotes the resort simply built around; others are engineered to fake it convincingly. Either way it works, because the drama costs nothing — you don’t light it, the sun does, and the whole effect shifts hour by hour as the shaft creeps across the water.

38. A Desert Pool Framed by Sand and Sculptural Cacti

Out in the desert, water is the entire argument. A deep blue pool set against pale sand and ochre earth is a jolt of contrast you won’t find anywhere else, and the designers lean all the way into it.

The planting stays deliberately sparse and sculptural. A few tall cacti throwing long shadows at low sun beat a whole jungle, every time. Emptiness is the point. All that bare ground around the water is what sells it as an oasis instead of somebody’s backyard.

37. An Alpine Pool Reflecting Snow-Capped Peaks

A pool in the snow sounds like a contradiction until you stand next to one at eight degrees and feel the steam on your face. The trick of an alpine pool is knowing when to shut up. The mountains are already doing the heavy lifting, so the water keeps quiet — a dark slate rim, a mirror-flat surface, and suddenly the whole peak lands twice: once up there, once at your feet.

Heat it right and the steam joins the show, curling off the surface in the cold. Set it against the chalet and the place reads like it knows exactly where it sits.

36. A Rice-Terrace Pool Following the Land’s Contours

Most resorts fight the slope. The clever ones follow it. A terraced pool borrows the logic of the rice paddies it sits among, stepping down the hill in stages so the water never stops moving, and each level feeds the one below in a slow sheet that carries its sound all the way up to the villas.

It flatters the land instead of flattening it. You’re not looking at a pool stamped onto a hillside — you’re looking at something that seems to have been there forever, and that illusion is the whole job.

35. A Forest Pool Set Beneath a Mature Tree Canopy

A pool under trees breaks every rule and works anyway. You’re taught to keep water well away from leaves and roots. Then you see a dark pool sitting in a shaft of filtered light, the canopy painting shifting patterns across the surface all afternoon, and the rulebook goes straight out the window.

The temperature drops ten degrees under that green ceiling. The light moves constantly. A daybed in one bright patch becomes the best seat on the property, and nobody who swims there forgets it.

34. A Crescent Pool Following a Natural Bay

Give a pool the same curve as the bay behind it and something quiet happens. Your eye stops seeing two shapes and starts seeing one. The water near you rhymes with the water out there, and the whole property feels wedded to its coastline rather than parked on top of it.

A crescent is harder to build than a rectangle and worth every extra euro. The inner curve hands you a natural lounging arc. The outer edge dissolves into the sea view. One of the oldest moves in resort design, and still one of the sharpest.

33. A Sunken Pool Sheltered Inside a Stone Courtyard

There’s a particular hush inside a courtyard pool, and the walls are what make it. Sink the water below grade, wrap it in warm stone, and you’ve built a room with no roof and a floor you can swim in. The outside world goes quiet. Sound bounces soft off the stone.

Riad builders worked this out centuries ago. Enclosure doesn’t shrink a space — it concentrates it. A small sunken pool in a good courtyard feels more private and more lavish than some sprawling rectangle sitting out in the open ever will.

32. A Split-Level Pool With an Underwater Connection

One pool at two heights. Swim up to the dividing wall, duck under it, and surface in the second basin a level down. The plumbing behind that is a headache, but the payoff is a guest who stumbles onto the trick by accident and then tells everyone they know.

Split levels solve a real problem on sloping sites. Instead of one awkward pool fighting the grade, you get two that lean into it, joined by a cascade over the divider — and the sound alone earns its keep. That submerged passage? Nobody forgets it.

31. A Perimeter-Overflow Pool With a Mirror-Smooth Surface

A perimeter-overflow pool has no visible edge. Water brims over all four sides into a hidden slot, so the surface sits dead level with the deck and dead calm at rest — a sheet of still water you could walk right up to, reflecting the sky like polished glass.

It’s the most demanding pool to build and the priciest to run. The deck has to be laser-level or the illusion collapses. But get it right and nothing else on the property stands a chance. A flat mirror of water does more for a lobby view than any sculpture.

30. A Long Lap Pool Aligned With the Main View

Point a long pool at the best thing in sight and the pool itself becomes a pointer. Your eye runs the length of the water and keeps going — straight out to the valley or the sea or the ridgeline. And orientation is free. It costs nothing to aim the long axis correctly, yet most resorts still manage to blow it.

A lap pool earns its length twice over: once for the swimmer grinding out actual laps, once for the view it frames. Flank it with a row of cypress and the perspective pulls even harder toward the horizon.

A well-aimed pool doesn’t hold the view. It hands it to you.

29. A Narrow Courtyard Pool Drawing the Eye Through the Hotel

Thread a narrow pool down a hotel’s central axis and you’ve built a sightline out of water. Walk in the front door and your eye runs the whole length of it, through an arch at the far end, out to whatever waits beyond. The pool quietly does the architect’s job of pulling you forward.

Width barely matters. A ribbon two meters across can carry a whole building’s composition. Swimming isn’t really the point here — the reflection is, running the full length of the court, doubling the arches and the light.

28. A Freeform Pool Shaped Around Existing Trees

The lazy move is to fell the trees and pour a rectangle. The good move keeps them and lets the pool bend around what’s already standing. A freeform pool shaped to spare its mature trees reads as if the water showed up second and politely made room. That story alone sells the property.

Mature trees take decades to grow and a single afternoon to lose. Build the pool around them and you inherit a canopy no landscaper could install in a lifetime, plus a handful of shade pockets folded right into the swim.

27. A Geometric Pool That Finishes the Architect’s Sentence

The pool that works hardest is the one you stop noticing as a pool. When the water’s footprint repeats the building’s grid, the whole property reads as one idea instead of a hotel with a swimming hole bolted on.

Look at the corners. A geometric pool lives or dies on them. Soft, rounded edges on a hard-lined building make the water look like an afterthought — but sharp mitered coping, aligned to the mullions of the glass behind it, and suddenly the eye travels from floor to deck to water without a hitch.

26. A Black-Bottom Pool That Turns Into a Mirror at Dusk

Most people assume blue tile makes blue water. A black-bottom pool proves otherwise, because dark plaster absorbs light instead of bouncing it, so the surface stops being transparent and starts behaving like glass.

At midday it reads deep and inky, almost lake-like. At dusk it does the real trick, catching the sky so cleanly that the pool disappears and the sunset doubles. Resorts near water lean on this hard — a black pool at the edge of an ocean erases the seam between the two.

Here’s the catch nobody mentions: every leaf and bug shows against the dark floor. These pools demand obsessive skimming. Beauty has a maintenance bill.

25. A Pale Limestone Pool Glowing That Impossible Caribbean Aqua

The water that looks lit from below usually isn’t. It’s the floor. Pale limestone or light sand-finish plaster reflects sunlight up through the water, and that bounce gives you the glowing Caribbean aqua people photograph obsessively.

Go deeper and the color darkens, so a good limestone basin shades from near-white at the steps to a saturated turquoise over the deep end. That gradient is free luxury. It costs nothing extra once the stone is chosen, and it does more for a property’s brochure than any amenity you could bolt on.

24. A Pool Edged in Stone Quarried Down the Road

You can tell when a pool was dropped onto a site versus grown out of it. Stone hauled from a quarry three states over always looks slightly wrong, like a visitor wearing dress shoes to the beach.

Local stone fixes that. When the coping and surround come from the same rock as the hillside, the whole thing settles into the land. Desert resorts use rust-colored ledgestone that matches the boulders behind them, while coastal ones use the pale shell stone that’s underfoot everywhere else.

The property reads older, more permanent, more expensive — all from choosing the rock that was already there.

23. A Mosaic Floor You Can Read Through the Water

A plain pool floor forgives dirty water. A mosaic floor does not. The whole point is seeing the pattern sharp and uninterrupted, which means the filtration has to be flawless and the chemistry dialed in tight.

And that’s the quiet signal a mosaic sends — not just that someone sprang for handset glass tile, but that someone keeps the water clean enough to deserve it. Gold-flecked Byzantine medallions, Moroccan starbursts, a simple Greek key border: whatever the pattern, the clarity is the real luxury on display.

22. A Pool With a Window You Can Peer Into From the Lounge

Most pools only exist from above. An underwater viewing window gives a property a second life nobody expected, turning the basin into a kind of living aquarium you watch from a lounge or a bar.

The engineering is no joke — acrylic panels thick enough to hold back tons of water, sealed perfectly, with the filtration tuned so there’s nothing floating between you and the view. Done right, it’s hypnotic. Light scatters through the water in moving ribbons, and the pool becomes something you experience from the inside.

It’s a flex. An honest one. You don’t build this without committing.

21. A Glass Bridge Floating Over the Deep End

A bridge over water is practical. A bridge you can see through is theater. Walking across a transparent span, turquoise water sliding beneath your feet, does something to people. They slow down. They take the photo.

What earns its keep for the property is how it connects spaces. A glass bridge can link a villa to a deck, or a bar to a terrace, without chopping the pool into pieces. The water stays whole underneath while the foot traffic happens overhead.

20. A Mature Tree Rising From an Island in the Middle

An island in a pool is a bold move. Put a grown tree on it and the pool stops looking new — it looks like the water was built around something that was always there.

That illusion of age is the whole value. A twenty-year-old frangipani or olive dropped onto a central island carries roots, history, weight. It throws real shade across the water in the afternoon and gives the surface something to hold in the morning.

Nurseries actually raise and haul mature specimen trees for exactly this. Expensive. Risky. And when it takes, worth every bit.

19. A Ring of Fire Burning From the Center of the Water

Fire and water aren’t supposed to coexist, which is exactly why a flame rising from the center of a pool stops everyone cold. The contradiction is the appeal.

At dusk it earns its keep. The fire doubles in the still surface, warm orange against a cooling blue sky, and the deck becomes somewhere you want to linger past sunset. There’s business logic under the drama: a fire feature keeps guests at the pool after dark, and a pool that’s busy at ten at night looks more alive than one that empties at six.

Gas-fed, of course. Nobody’s hauling logs out onto a platform in the deep end.

18. A Sheet of Water Falling Flat Down a Bare Wall

A good water wall produces no splash — just a flat, unbroken sheet sliding down the stone like poured glass, and the low even hush it makes is doing half the work.

It all comes down to the lip. Cut the weir dead-level across the full width and the water releases in one continuous plane instead of dribbling in streaks. Get it right and a plain concrete wall becomes the quietest luxury on the property.

17. A Rain Curtain Forming a Sculptural Pool Entrance

Water you walk through, not around. A rain curtain turns entering the pool into theater — a sheer sheet falling from a bronze channel overhead that you part with your shoulders.

The build is quieter than it looks. That ledge has to sit dead level, because a single low spot breaks the sheet into drips and the whole thing falls apart. Get it right and the water mirrors the sky before you’ve touched it, cooling the air a few degrees around the threshold.

16. An Underwater Sculpture Becoming the Pool’s Signature

Most pools tile the floor and forget it. A submerged sculpture flips that logic on its head. Suddenly the most interesting thing in frame is five feet underwater, changing shape every time the surface moves.

The good ones are cast in bronze or carved stone — materials that shrug off chlorine and salt and only improve with age. From a lounger they shimmer. From the water directly above, they distort and breathe with every ripple, and you can lose a while just watching.

15. A Swim-Up Bar Designed as Part of the Architecture

A swim-up bar bolted onto the deck as an afterthought always looks like exactly that. The ones that land are drawn into the building from day one — counter flush with the waterline, stools submerged, the whole thing reading as a continuation of the wall rather than a prop dropped into the shallow end.

Stone that runs from the bar back into the colonnade tells your eye the pool and the building are one thing, not two.

Honed stone handles the wet beautifully. So does warm plaster. Avoid anything laminate — it swells, it peels, and it announces the cost-cutting to everyone ordering a drink.

14. A Submerged Lounge With In-Water Seating

Half in, half out. An in-water lounge solves the oldest pool problem going: you either swim or you perch on the edge dripping. Here you do both at once, parked on a cushioned bench with the water lapping at your shins.

Nobody talks about drainage, and they should. Those cushions need quick-dry foam and a seat that sheds water fast, or you’re sitting on a sponge by noon.

13. A Sunken Conversation Pit Surrounded by Water

The 1970s handed us the conversation pit, and then we spent decades dutifully filling them back in. Resorts are digging them out again — only now they’re ringed by water, a dry sunken island you reach down a few submerged steps.

It’s a genuinely clever bit of spatial psychology. Drop a group below the waterline and they feel tucked away, private, even parked in the middle of an open pool. Add a fire table at the center and nobody’s leaving before midnight.

12. A Baja Shelf Furnished With Sculptural Loungers

A Baja shelf — some call it a tanning ledge — is that wide shallow lip at the pool’s edge, a few inches of water where you can stretch out without really swimming. Pure genius for anyone who wants the water but not the plunge.

Furniture is what makes it read expensive. Drop a couple of teak rope loungers straight into the shallows and that leftover edge becomes the best seat on the property. A small floating tray for a drink seals it.

11. Private Cabanas Positioned Directly Over the Pool

A cabana on the deck is a daybed with a roof. A cabana built out over the pool, perched on slim pilings with a ladder dropping straight into the water, is a different animal entirely.

The water underneath does the heavy lifting. Light bounces up through the gauze, reflections crawl across the ceiling all afternoon, and you can slide off the edge into the pool without ever touching dry land. This is the kind of detail that lands in every photo the property posts — because it lands in every photo the guests post too.

10. Floating Daybeds Anchored in a Quiet Cove

Floating daybeds are the pool’s answer to a good hammock. You climb on, you drift a few feet, and you lose track of what day it is.

Placement is everything. Park one in the main swim lane and it’s a hazard nobody asked for. Tuck it into a sheltered cove, tethered loosely so it wanders a little but never escapes, and it turns into the quietest patch on the whole property.

9. Pool Villas With Steps Straight Into the Water

No gate, no ladder, no gap between your room and the water. A villa with steps running straight from the terrace into the pool erases the whole idea of ‘going for a swim.’ You just keep walking.

This is the layout that lets a room own its water instead of borrowing it. Those steps want to be broad and gradual — more Roman bath than pool ladder — finished in the exact stone as the terrace so the line between dry and wet simply dissolves.

8. A Private Plunge Pool Attached to Every Suite

A plunge pool isn’t for laps. It’s four or five steps across, chest-deep, the kind of water you stand in with a drink while the heat breaks. And when every suite gets one, the whole property stops feeling like a hotel and starts feeling like a hundred tiny private houses.

Slate and dark tile are the move. They turn the water into a black mirror that doubles the sky and quietly hides the small footprint. A pale-bottomed plunge pool just looks like what it is — small.

7. A Heated Pool Breathing Steam Into a Frozen Landscape

Nothing sells a winter property faster than a pool that looks like it’s smoking. Heated water against a frozen deck throws a column of steam skyward, and that haze handles half your marketing for you — warmth, invitation, the one spot on the whole mountain where you can stand outside and not freeze.

Setting carries the rest. A pool like this fails the second there’s no snow in frame, because contrast is the whole point: dark water, white ground, pine shadows, a wall of mist catching the low sun. Walk up to one at dawn and you catch chlorine, wet stone, and a thread of woodsmoke off the lodge chimney.

6. A Thermal Pool Tucked Into a Walled Spa Courtyard

A thermal pool earns its keep by feeling hidden. Wall it into a courtyard and the whole property gains a secret — a warm mineral soak nobody can spot from the lobby. Guests lower their voices around it. They stay longer.

Travertine makes the room. Warm, porous, the color of honey in late light, it holds heat and softens every sound bouncing off it. Add olive trees in terracotta and a couple of arched niches, and even a small pool reads old-world and deliberate. I’ve watched resorts blow a fortune on a giant infinity edge when a quiet walled soak would have done more for the booking page.

5. A Natural Pool Cleaned by Its Own Planted Wetland

No chlorine. No blue. A natural pool filters itself through a planted wetland, so the swimming water ends up the color of a clear lake instead of a gym locker room.

Half the pool is the part nobody expects to love. Reeds, lilies, and marsh grasses in a shallow regeneration zone pull nutrients and keep the water clean, which means the landscaping isn’t decoration — it’s plumbing. The whole thing hums with dragonflies, and the surface smells like pond, in the good way.

For an eco-property, this is the pool that tells the story without a single sign. Guests see the reeds, they get it.

4. A Shaded Lap Pool Running Beneath a Grand Colonnade

Most resorts get this backwards. They plant the pool in full sun and let guests cook. Run it under a colonnade and you’ve built the most sought-after real estate on the property — a long ribbon of cool water banded with shadow.

The columns do the heavy lifting. Rows of stone throw stripes across the surface that drift all day, so the water is never flat, and dark mosaic tile turns it into a mirror. Swim the length and you pass through alternating sun and shade with every stroke, the reflections below half the reason anyone remembers it.

3. A West-Facing Infinity Pool Built Around the Sunset

Orientation is everything, and a surprising number of pools point the wrong way. Face the thing west, line up the vanishing edge with the horizon, and for forty minutes a day the pool becomes the best seat on the coast.

At golden hour the water and sky fuse. The infinity edge erases the line between pool and sea, the sun lays a gold path straight across both, and everyone at the lip is lit like a film still. That’s the frame that lands on the homepage — and the one guests shoot themselves.

2. A Night Pool Lit Low and Blue From Below the Surface

A pool nobody swims in after dark still earns its budget. Light it softly from below and it turns into a lantern — a glowing shape that pulls the whole evening landscape together.

Restraint separates the good from the garish. Skip the color-changing light show. One soft blue-white glow under the surface, a few candle lanterns at the edge, and the water does the rest, throwing light up onto stone and palm trunks. The effect is quiet enough to hear the filter hum and the cicadas.

1. A Glass-Walled Rooftop Pool Hung Over the Skyline

A glass-sided pool thirty floors up sells a feeling no ground-level pool ever can — that you’re swimming out over the city with nothing but water holding you up.

The transparent wall is the whole trick. Swim to that edge, look down through the glass at traffic the size of ants, and the pool stops being a pool and becomes a dare. Guests photograph it first and talk about it longest. And it quietly tells everyone what tier of hotel they’ve walked into.
