Picture a motorhome from the Reagan years: wood-grain cabinets as far as the eye can see, a chunky CRT television nestled in its own little alcove, and fluorescent lights buzzing overhead. It had good bones. It also had decades of dust on its taste.
So we lined up 22 makeover ideas for that same tired old interior and asked our readers to be the judges. Everyone tapped a ❤️ or a 👎 under each photo, with the same before shot sitting right above every one. No names, no accounts, no peeking at what anyone else picked.
By the time the voting closed, 437 readers had weighed in, and the clear favorite was a soft, sunlit kitchen that barely raised its voice. The dramatic, moody showstoppers? They had a rougher time than we expected.
Same RV, Same Before Photo, 22 Different Afters

Here’s how it worked. We started with one tired 1980s RV interior, all wood-grain cabinets, a boxy CRT TV, and that unmistakable fluorescent hum. Then we showed readers 22 different makeovers of that exact space, and we placed the same before photo above every single after. That meant nobody was judging one makeover against another’s starting point. They were judging the idea alone.
Between Aug 30 and Oct 25, 2026, 437 readers tapped ❤️ or 👎 and left us 2,346 votes in total. Each reader could vote once per photo, and every vote was anonymous.
When all the tapping was done, the split was dead even: overall, 50% of votes were a ❤️. In other words, for every makeover readers adored, there was one that left them cold. The fun part is figuring out which was which.

The Sage Kitchen Was the Runaway Favorite

❤️ 97% of 269 readers who voted on this photo
The crowd favorite wasn’t flashy. A sage-green kitchen with light wood counters pulled in 97% ❤️ from 269 readers, making it both the best-loved makeover and the most-voted photo of the bunch. Soft, bright, and the kind of place you’d happily make coffee in at a trailhead.
Close behind came an idea that didn’t touch the inside at all: a canvas awning that turns the campsite into a proper patio, with 96% from 47 readers. And in third, a cream interior with a dark built-in bookshelf where that old CRT TV used to live, earning 94% from 175 readers.
The thread tying the winners together is hard to miss. Light walls and cabinets, natural wood, a few plants, and daylight pouring in. Readers knew exactly what they wanted to wake up to.

Every Makeover, From Most Loved to Least

At the top, three makeovers broke away from the pack: the sage kitchen at 97% of 269, the canvas awning patio at 96% of 47, and the dark recessed bookshelf at 94% of 175. After that, a comfortable middle tier earned solid approval, led by a pale plank ceiling with a long skylight at 79% of 104 and a Scandinavian breakfast nook at 77% of 99.
From there, the warmth cooled. An outdoor kitchen landed at 73% of 89, pale paneling with linen curtains at 71% of 117, and a tan leather driver’s cab at 68% of 44. A warm sleeping loft with a curtain sat right on the fence at 48% of 91.
Down at the bottom, the industrial looks and the half-finished ideas struggled. Open wood-and-pipe shelving came in at 10% of 121, and a checkerboard mudroom with hooks and a bench finished last at 7% of 98. A word of caution, though: the whiskers on our chart show a 95% range, and when two of those ranges overlap, the result is simply too close to call. Plenty of neighbors on this list are in a photo finish.
Light and Airy Beat Dark and Moody by a Mile

When we sorted the makeovers into groups by their overall look, the pattern practically shouted. The light and airy makeovers pulled 87% ❤️ across 764 votes over five makeovers. The dark and moody ones, with black cabinets, pipe shelving, a brooding bar, and jewel tones, managed just 20% across 634 votes over six makeovers.
That’s the surprise. Those dark rooms photograph beautifully, all drama and contrast and boutique-hotel energy. But readers didn’t want to live in them. Wood-and-pipe shelving landed at 10% of 121, the black-and-stainless galley at 16% of 96, and deep purple benches at 20% of 116.
Bold color didn’t fare much better, at 30% across 383 votes, roughly matching the barely-changed-or-odd group at 30% across 385 votes. Meanwhile, outdoor ideas came in strong at 81% across 136 votes. Make of it what you will: in a space that’s already small, readers wanted it to feel bigger and brighter, not darker and cozier.

The Best Upgrade Might Be Outside the Door

❤️ 73% of 89 readers who voted on this photo
One of the happiest discoveries was that readers loved what you can add beyond the walls. The canvas awning patio scored 96% of 47, and the outdoor kitchen with a full-size grill landed at 73% of 89. As a group, outside-the-RV ideas earned 81% across 136 votes.
It makes a certain amount of sense. The whole point of the open road is the open air, and a shaded patio or a proper grill stretches your living space without squeezing another inch out of the cabin. Even the driver’s cab got some love, with a tan leather and wood-trim version earning 68% of 44.
Half a Makeover Pleased Almost Nobody

If there’s one lesson tucked in the bottom of the chart, it’s this: readers don’t want a renovation that stops halfway. The makeovers that changed one thing and left the 1980s interior sitting right there around it took a beating.
A large skylight installed over the old cabinets managed just 26% of 65. Cork-toned walls pulled 47% of 64. A solar roof deck turned open-air room came in at 28% of 67. And the mudroom with hooks and a checkerboard floor finished dead last at 7% of 98.
Grouped together, these barely-changed-or-odd ideas landed at 30% across 385 votes. The message was consistent: when the new feature has to share the room with the old wood grain, the whole thing reads as unfinished. Readers wanted the entire space to change, not just a corner of it.

The Bottom Line
Across 2,346 votes, our readers told us something refreshingly simple. Light walls, natural wood, a little daylight, and the occasional plant beat drama every time. The sage kitchen took the top spot, the awning patio proved the best view might be out the door, and the moody showstoppers that look so good in photos couldn’t win over people imagining themselves actually living inside.
And readers had very little patience for a makeover that left the 1980s half intact. If you’re going to redo that old camper, our 437 judges say commit to it, let the sun in, and don’t stop at the countertop.
How we did this
- Readers of our 1980s RV makeover article tapped ❤️ or 👎 under each makeover photo between Aug 30 and Oct 25, 2026.
- 437 readers cast 2,346 votes. Each reader can vote once per photo. Votes are anonymous: no names, emails or accounts.
- Percentages are the share of ❤️ votes. The 95% ranges show how much a result could move with more votes; when two ranges overlap, we call it too close to call.
- Every makeover photo was shown under the same “before” photo, and the makeover images are illustrations of each idea.
- Style groups are our own sort of each makeover by its overall look.
